On possibly one of the hottest days of the year thus far, a commendable 12 tackled Morley Hayes. Hoenigmann pushed his own boundaries of lateness to the very limit, setting a new land speed record whilst breaking both the speed of light and sound, on a hair raising trip from London. Meadows was holing out on 18 at Stanton with the convoy ready to roll and jumped in with spikes still donned. Tuckwell with usual organization, couldn’t for the life of him think who the 12th man was and was about to go tail between legs to the proshop before Daft arrived.
Radford, Jenkinson, Chubb and Tuckwell Jnr opened up, the latter with a birdie – so only one way to go from there then… The glass was half empty for Jenkinson with shots disappearing left but impressively tripled his score on 4 before doubling it on 5 (you do the maths! Answers on a postcard please) Chubb, for once, was off the pace, not the day to be running back for a reload, on 3, with the sun beating down.
Once again Radford’s good holes were very good with the putter in fine touch but couldn’t find the consistency from the fairways. After informing his playing partners on being up the right was favourable Tuckwell proceeded to hoik one left, out of bounds, for his only blemish in an otherwise steady front 9; and did a spot of fishing for Chubb who was faced with a treacherous bunker shot on 8. Jenkinson gathered momentum with a tidy 15 point 7 hole showing, with no mercy on the greens. Tuckwell by 2.
The back 9 was all about Team Chubb – with 11 points on the front 9 it was time to light the touch paper. Big 4 used the combined skill and wisdom of his playing partners to start to burn it up. 13 points in 4 holes was exceptional scoring, a 5 iron to 4 foot the catalyst on 10, propelling the Chubster up the leaderboard.
Tuckwell holed out on 10: thankfully Chubb was well positioned in the slip cordon as a bunker shot was thinned fiercely out the back of a trap and water bound before being taken comfortably about the throat region in one smooth motion. Sign him up Robbie!
Radford hit a purple patch of his own, with some of his best drives to date and put Tuckwell in the shade by brutally firing over the ditch on 14 when Tuckwell was ferreting about trying to show Chubb how to lay up: Chubb then proceeded to send one greenside.
Tuckwell’s round petered out with another ‘out of town’ and limped home with some ugly right to left swingers. Jenkinson suffered a similarly tame finish and couldn’t quite get it going with Chubb draining all the effort and attention with some Herculean scoring and the group honours.
The closing holes played out like some form of surreal comedy sketch with the conversation on the greens following a similar pattern
RC: Boys which way do you think this breaks? I reckon it’s outside right lip.
Boys: Chubb, it’s inside left if not straight.
RC: I’m going to hit it outside right anyway.
Boys: It’s inside left.
RC: (after holing the putt) I told you it was outside right!
Boys: You hit it inside left!
Hood, Horsburgh Jnr, Daft and A.T were the sandwich fillers with A.T. on record that Morley wasn’t one of his favourite tracks; despite a win and second in two TGS outings and opened with a nice nett birdie. 2 more followed in the next 3 holes to begin ominously. Daft also opened with a nett birdie and a tidy first few holes before starting to feel the heat.
Hood hit 3 nice shots to the first but just found sand and decided that it was so nice that he would stay in their for a while… .
Horsburgh and Daft both found one of the double ditches snaking across the 5th as A.T continued to sizzle in the sun. Daft removed a sizeable portion of the 6th green after a 3 stab while Hood finally found salvation with a par down 7.
Horsburgh was threatening but couldn’t find top gear as the heat began to take it’s toll. A.T became the target, quite literally on 9, Meadows sensing A.T was on fire launched one over the green on 9 into the ditch and near perilously close to the half way group leader, by an impressive 6 shots.
Horsey begun to mount his challenge with 12 points in 5 holes as did Hood who found consistency despite being in a state of fatigue. Daft appeared to be carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders and was disillusioned with his 5th short putt missed on 14.
Horsburgh finished like Tuckwell and Jenkinson before him – weakly, as A.T was saved a watery grave, by the sand, on 17 and duly capitalised. Daft was thankful for a shot back while Hood was thankful just to finish. A ‘it’s not one of my favourites’ T was certainly the leader in the club house with the TGS Morley course record.
Baker Snr, Meadows and Marriot were joined midway down the first by Hoenigmann. 13 points in 4 holes for Meadows was the dream start with rounds running out and a big score a must. Baker, with buggy, found the going tough and threatened retirement more than once through the opening 9 – The TGS low definitely the target to beat. As it was for Marriot who couldn’t find the usual rythym, and points hard to come by.
Hoenigmann slotted straight into his stride 18 points in 8 holes, the adrenalin still pumping from the ‘fasten your seatbelts’ white knuckle drive to the course. Meadows kept his foot firmly on the gas, a minor wobble on 6 was nothing, in a blistering front 9 to leave him clear by 4.
Baker could finally breath a sigh of relief on 13 with the TGS low safely surpassed. Marriot achieved it in one swoop on 11 with a terrific nett eagle, the first of 2 on the back 9, and used it as the catalyst for a superb 20 point last 8 holes. Hoenigmann was in need of refueling as the needle began to flit near to empty but just had enough gas in the tank to see him home.
With the engine still purring nicely after 4 nett birdies in succession Meadows set about the final stretch and coasted over the line possibly for the first time ever scoring on every hole – you’ve changed!
With all on the balcony Meadows anxiously totted up his total with A.T. safely settled down with pint in hand. A cagey few moments finally revealed that it was Meadows (42), and the new TGS Morley course record by one shot from A.T. (41) in an epic shoot out. Team Chubb (35) with an immaculate level par, 24 point back 9 total was the other podium place. Hoenigmann (31) finished well despite playing 17 holes!
